What Are Search Engines and Directories?

google-yahoo-logos

The term search engine has become the predominant term for search system or search site, but before reading any further, you need to understand the different types of search, um, thingies, you’re going to run across.

Basically, you need to know about four thingies:

1. Search indexes or search engines: These are the predominant type of search tools you’ll run across. Originally, the term search engine referred to some kind of search index, a huge database containing information from individual Web sites. Google’s vast index (http://www.google.com/ ) contains over 3 billion pages, for instance. Large search-index companies own thousands of computers that use software known as spiders or robots (or just plain bots — Google’s software is known as Googlebot) to grab Web pages and read the information stored in them. These systems don’t always grab all the information on each page or all the pages in a Web site, but they grab a significant amount of information and use complex algorithms to index that information. Google is the world’s most popular search engine.

2. Search directories: A directory is a categorized collection of information about Web sites. Rather than containing information from Web pages, it contains information about Web sites. The most significant search directories are owned by Yahoo! (http://www.dir.yahoo.com/) and the Open Directory Project (http://www.dmoz.org/). Directory companies don’t use spiders or bots to download and index pages on the Web sites in the directory; rather, for each Web site, the directory contains information such as a title and description. The two most important directories, Yahoo! and Open Directory, have staff members who examine all the sites in the directory to make sure they are placed into the correct categories and meet certain quality criteria. Smaller directories often allow people submitting sites to specify which category should be used.

3. Non-spidered indexes: I wasn’t sure what to call these things, so I made up a name: non-spidered indexes. A number of small indexes, less important than the major indexes such as Google, don’t use spiders to examine the full contents of each page in the index. Rather, the index contains background information about each page, such as titles, descriptions, and keywords. In some cases, this information comes from the meta tags pulled off the pages in the index. In other cases, the person who enters the site into the index provides this information.

4. Pay-per-click systems: Some systems provide pay-per-click listings. Advertisers place small ads into the systems, and when users perform their searches, the results contain some of these sponsored listings, typically above and to the right of the free listings.

5 Tips - How to Get Your Blog on the First Page of Google

How about 5 easy tips about how to get your blog on the first page of Google? Yeah, I see you are shaking your head and smiling. I think you are understand that if your blog will get on the first page of Google - you will get much more traffic to your blog, because bigger part of Google users use only first page of Google search results. That's why it is so important to get on the first page of search results. Believe me or not, but this method is working. For example, I have a collective social blog (or community) where everyone can make their own posts, share articles, tips, reviews and knowledge - Mocii.com, most of the posts are about Tech/Gadgets, reviews, how to's. It is also useful because you can submit an unique article there and put backlinks to your blog or posts from your blog (link will be without nofollow tag). So, all my posts on Mocii.com are on the first page of Google search results (most of them in Top 5, some of them on the first position!)

5 Tips - How to Get Your Blog on the First Page of Google:

  1. Submit posts with unique content. Your blog content must be unique, content is a king! Do not steal content from other blogs, Google will see everything! If you really like someone's post, you can re-wright it. Your content must be 99% unique. Don't wright every hour, it is too much. Submit 1-3 posts / day and keep this tempo.
  2. After you will create 10 posts on your blog, you must add your blog sitemap (rss) to Google Sitemap. If you have Blogger blog - use your RSS, if you are using, for example, Wordpress - create sitemap with Google Sitemap Generator or create your own sitemap. After adding - Google will crawl your sitemap everyday and he will know about all your new posts. Remember, Google will love you if you will have blog with good, quality and unique content.
  3. Add your blog and RSS to blogs and RSS catalogs and readers. Use Google to find them. This will give you lot of free backlinks and traffic.
  4. Submit some unique articles to article directories. Don't forget to put backlinks with anchors to your blog and to some of your posts. Articles must have the same subjects as your blog or post. Do not submit too often.
  5. Put your backlink everywhere where its possible. Put your link to
  6. DMOZ, make answers on Yahoo! Answers (use backlinks in your answers), make comments on different blogs, and submit your articles to social bookmarks.
    Cheers

How to get PR5 links to your blog or webpage

I think you know that links to your blog is one of the best methods to make your blog popular. Backlinks will give you some traffic of new visitors to your blog, your blog will be crawled faster by search engines, PageRank of your blog will be bigger (this will increase traffic from search engines, because your blog will be on better position).

Yes, any link is good for your blog, but better to have good links. Link must be from the main page (home page) and it must have good PageRank. More links with good PR you have, bigger PR of your blog you will get.

So, where to get good backlinks? You can buy it, you can make link exchange with friendly blogs, or you can get them for free =)

Where to get free links? From social bookmarks =) Do you know Digg.com? Yes, you know it. How to get good PR link from Digg? Read next tip:

There are few ways to get good links from Digg:

1. You can create good post or article on your blog and post it on Digg. If you are lucky, your post will get to main page of Digg (page with popular articles). Main page of Digg have PR8! You will get lot of extra visitors, some backlinks, some money from banner Ads. But this is not for long, your link will be there just few hours.

2. How to get life time link from Digg for free? From you profile on Digg =) But you profile don't have PR at all, so you need to make it bigger. How? Easy =)

You can create good PR profile on Digg in 1-2 months. I've did it in 1 month (I have PR5 digg profile). All you need is to make posts on Digg, make comment and dugg stories. I don't know exactly how many this staff you need but I can tell you how many I had.

- 130 posted stories

- 300 duggs

Better to have good stories, with diggs, and better to have popular stories, they will give you bigger traffic and bigger chances to make your profile popular.

3. If you have friends on Digg, they also can add link to your blog in their profiles.

Tips: Better to submit stories from your blog, each submitted story is a link to your blog.

You can have lot of profiles on Digg =)

Digg is not only social bookmark service =) You can use Reddit, Propeller and others.

Cheers
